Strangely, my own skin malady has reinforced this same understanding. In so many ways, God has knocked out my legs from underneath me so He could find me on my knees.
I guess I'd take issue with the notion that God doesn't cause suffering and pain. God is free to use any tool at His disposal for His own (sometimes mysterious) purposes. As it is said, "God has given. God has taken away. May God be praised."
